Intraoral repair of fractured porcelain restorations: techniques and materials
Although porcelain fused to metal crowns are reputed to be long-lasting restorations, fractures in ceramic and ceramometal restorations can occur. Until recently, there was no predictable technique for repairing the fractured porcelain restoration with a light-curing composite resin. However, with the advent of a new generation of ceramic and metal bonding systems, there are today techniques available to repair fractured porcelain with fair expectations of success. Although intraoral porcelain repair is a feasible and cost-effective alternative to removing and remaking fractured restorations, there are virtually no long-term clinical studies that investigate porcelain repair procedures. Therefore, it is important to inform the patient that success depends to a considerable extent on whether the reason for failure has determined.
