Premolar autotransplantation to the anterior: biological, aesthetic, and patient-reported outcomes
Autotransplantation of premolars to the anterior region is a biological and predictable treatment option for replacing missing or severely compromised teeth, particularly in children and adolescents. Autotransplantation offers demonstrable advantages over conventional prosthetic and implant-based solutions due to its intrinsic ability to adapt to continuing skeletal changes and dentoalveolar growth, the regeneration of alveolar bone and gingiva, and the possibility of orthodontic movement. High survival and success rates are being reported for premolar autotransplants to the anterior region, both for donor teeth with an open apex and for fully developed donor teeth. When opting for autotransplantation, biological principles, indications, surgical and orthodontic parameters, and potential complications must be taken into account. Autotransplantation is widely applicable and clinically relevant across various age groups.
