Autotransplantation of incompletely formed molars in young patients
Autotransplantation of molars is a valuable treatment option for tooth replacement in adolescents. In a retrospective analysis of 13 young patients, 17 molars were transplanted, with an average follow-up of 16 months. Root formation was 60-90% at the time of transplantation, and the apex was not yet fully formed. Primarily, (3rd) maxillary molars were transplanted into the mandible. All transplanted molars integrated physiologically, without ankylosis or need for endodontic treatment. One case of limited, non-progressive resorption was observed. None of the teeth showed deepened pockets or periodontal complications. The use of a 3D replica reduced surgical time and increased predictability. Autotransplantation of molars thus appears to be a safe and predictable method in young patients and a valuable alternative to (waiting for) implantology.
